Then

I had a plan for me and Zelda
Pretend to be someone else
Find new parents
Be safe forever

Then the Nazis came

This blurb simple, but to the point. i love blurbs like this. it allows me to choose what i want to read. Although this is an 'Ideal' blurb, this is not what made me read the book. What made me read the book is the first book 'Once'. after reading once I absolutely had to read the sequel. I wanted to finish Felix and Zelda's adventure. This is a MUST READ if you have read the the first book. If you have read the first book but haven't read this, that is like watching half of a good movie and not knowing what happens at the end.
Then
I strongly suggest that you follow through with this link:http://www.morrisgleitzman.com/books/fst_then.html

In the website above, you can read a chapter of any of Morris Gleitzmans' books. (or if you are lazy, you can get it read to you!)

Electronic Literature

1. I do like the idea of have novels online, but i think i would rather traditional books. i think this because i can imagine myself getting distractive on the internet and going onto something else. To give a definite answer i think i would have to try it out first.

2.I believe that features like 'to drive the story forward, you have to interact' may intrigue certain children. i also think that it children would enjoy it because it is 'online' which is now very popular throughout the world. It also reminded me of those old 'choose your own adventure' stories that i used to read a lot of. i remember having to make my own decisions on how to do the story.

3. As i have said before one of the disadvantages of e- literature is that it is also on the computer. I say this is a disadvantage because a lot of people use computers for things such as: communication, games, music etc. this could lead the reader away from the story. Also this wastes electricity, I say this because some people may take a long time to read a book. this leads me on to how it could hurt the readers eyes staring at a bright computer for maybe two hours.

4. I wouldn't say myself that this ' isn't  really different' from traditional novels, but others may say it is the same, just on the computer. It might be just because they are more comfortable with the computer.

5. I have never seen any Electronic literature besides inanimate alice. In fact i was surprised that anything like this even existed.

6. As said before, I cannot straight away judge e- literature because I have never tried it. But in saying this, i think i would rather just reading normal books. I am not much of a computer freak,( i don't even use face book) so i think i would get confused as to where to go on e-literature whereas with a normal book, i just have to turn a page.

Learning about authors.

Rick Riordan's web page is very appealing to the human eye if you enjoyed his books. It has a picture of a dragon with a boy standing next to it and the writing is written in the same font as his book 'Percy Jackson and the lightning thief.' It also has a picture of him smiling, thus showing the man behind the book.

Rick started his career as a english teacher. This lead on to writing books. The 'ancient Greek' inspired books started as he had great interest of history. He was also a teacher in that subject. Saint mary's hall awarded him with the schools first 'Master Teacher award'. Whilst teaching, Rick wrote novels for grownups. He started writing the lightning thief series as a bed time story for his own son.

Verbal Abuse  (type in interesting on google)

Come on you pile of sticks, why are you so scared? Martin yelled. I didn’t have much time, I couldn’t stall, so I just said; “Ill do it.” This is possibly the stupidest thing I have ever said in my whole entire life. I should have fallen into peer pressure. But because I did, this is my story:

Martin dared me to go to the play ground at night and say: I summon the portal of eternity. This was a myth that if you said the 6 words, a portal will open and suck you like a black hole. Some say its true, but most say it is a myth.  I believe that it is true, because something terrible was found at the park last year.
“Hurry up!!!!” martin screamed “or are you too chicken.” He smirked.
“Just wait, what’s your problem.” I argued. Man, after seeing how beat up Jake was last year after doing this, I wasn’t too eager to do it myself.
“Are you scared about what happened to Jake last year” Martin said grinning “ I already told you it was Lysander who beat him up.”
“ I know, I know, you’ve told me 100 times before.”

Ok, it is finally time to face my fears, and say the six words of doom. “I summon the portal of eternity.” The ground started to shake, there was a crack in the ground, the suddenly everything started to disappear. Martin was gone, the playground was gone, then everything turned black. Except for one part. There was a purple thing glowing hastily in the distance. I started running towards it, but nothing happened. “ Why can’t I run”. I moved three steps’. Wait a minute, all I did was say ‘why cant I run’ and I moved. “Why cant I run, why cant I run, why cant I run. “I ran nine steps” then I reached the purple glow. I figured out that it was a portal, but to where? I had no other options but to go in. I stepped inside. I suddenly found myself descending at really high speeds. Then I stopped, thinking that I was dead. But then I realised that I was alive and I could see. I could see a light, a few steps from where I was.  It sort of looked like the light before your entered a footy stadium. “ Hurry along” a voice said beside me. I didn’t even realise he was standing there. “Well, go on, enter your fight.” He said. At this point I was scared and confused. I saw a boy that I thought I knew, he looked like Cody Cowley, a boy from I my class, but inside what look liked a boxing ring. I was told to move. But I couldn’t, but then I realised that I had to say what I wanted to physically do. “Walk” I told my self, and as soon as I knew it I was in the boxing ring. “Ready, Fight!” came a voice from a loud megaphone. Then everyone in the stadium started to cheer. I look at Cody, and BOOM! I get smacked in the face. I didn’t know by what though, his hands were behind his back. Then I heard him say “ orange” then a huge fist came from his mouth and punched me right in the face. Once I realised how to fight, I got the hang of it, the bigger the word, the stronger the attack. “Oreo, cup, microwave.” I shouted. Bam Bam Bam. Ihad knocked him out. he was dead.

After killing more of my classmates, I had to face the most talked about reigning champion. Everyone started cheering “Mikey, Mikey, Mikey. Then I noticed who I had to fight… Michael Hinds, the smartest kid in my grade. I yelled the longest word I knew “Television” it hit him with a thump, but it didn’t look like it did anything, Michael Grinned then said: “antidisestablishmentarianism.” Then a huge fist with brass knuckles on it came out and smashed me in the face....

The design of a novels cover.

The design of the the novels cover is a crucial part of selling a book.  For example the way some people choose to read different novels is by the front cover, and this means that if the novels front cover isn't appealing to the eyes of a reader, than it will not be sold or borrowed, thus not being read. I personally do not like the design of the cover for the novel 'Percy Jackson and the lightning thief', I believe that it is too crowded and messy, that the designer had  too many good ideas to fit onto a small book. Even one of my classmates Cody Howley did not like the design of the front cover. His first thoughts were: oh, you like to read books about fighting monsters and dragons. (He did not believe in; do not judge a book by its cover)
But maybe he would read it if it had a better design of the cover and realise the Godlyness of the book.

I think that the ideal cover for a novel has to be simple, but detailed enough to be able to grab someones attention. But the cover 'Percy Jackson and the lightning thief' had way too much detail for my liking. But the book I i read, has three different types of front cover. The particular one I read had too many things on it. Here are the pics of the three novels: (The one I read is in the middle)

Locked
Man I hate this daily routine of the three hour walk to boring old school.  I am beginning to think that this walk is not worth it. I especially don’t like it in these parts of Indonesia, everywhere you look you find people looking at your bags with grins on their scrubby faces. Like just last week, a man attempted to steal my bag, but he dropped it as soon as he found out there was only my lunch.

“Please help, Please help” a cute girl said so gloomy. She was even holding a sign, so I thought it could only be for a charity. I probably should have noticed the big building behind her that said Teach Girls, Give them a Real home. Even though I knew I only had a few minutes left to get to class, I decided to go see what it was about, and anyway, I would be late to class for a good cause. I ask the girl “ hey where can I go to donate” I could of sworn she had an evil grin on her face until she said “oh, umm thanks, you have to go inside for that.” she said with such innocence, that I had forgotten about her weird grin.

As I enter the building, I notice that there was nothing and no one here. I start to go for the door. I push it, but nothing happened. I thought to myself, ‘ oh I must have to pull it to open.’ So I do. But still nothing happened. That’s funny, why isn’t it opening. I start shaking the door. I shook it harder, and harder until it got too violent.  “Excuse me Sir” a deep yet assuring voice said behind me. I immediately turn around, and standing there was tall black, fit looking man. “Didn’t mean to scare you or nuttin.” He said.
“Oh, are you the maintenance man here to fix the door, it is a little bit stuck.” I said willingly. “ No, I’m no maintenance man, I was just here to tell you, your stuck here forever.”
“Your joking right?” I said starting to tear up out of shock. I mean I how could I be stuck here forever.

“I am not much of a joker son. We are stuck here forever.” He argued.
“That’s impossible. This is a prank isn’t it.” I said with a tear running down my face.
“Its Alright kid, I was your age when I got stuck down here.”
“What?” I said “you look like your at least 31, I’m just 12.”
“Oh I know that. I’ve been here for about 20 years.”
“Your Lying!” I screamed at him.

My Reading experiences

How I choose a novel.
The main way I would normally choose a novel is by based on what other other people have told me what is a good book or popular authors. I do this predominantly because I am not much of a big reader and i dont know what is good. I also choose based on the blurb. The blurbs gives me information about what the novel is about, without giving away the story or the ending.

My favorite authors are: Morris Gleitzman, John Marseden, Andy Griffiths and newly added Rick Riordan. I like these authors because of the types of books and novels they write. I like the intense moments of action thriller books, and the funny moments of the comedy books.

I Personally like to read in my room with a glass of water and some snacks. although I only like this spot during the day, because of the sunlight that comes through my window that is strong enough to light up my room. During the night, i read in the dining room where there is a strong light that illuminates my book, without me having to strain my eyes.

The two authors i have read this term are Morris Gleitzman and of course Rick Riordan. I like their genre of book as they are both similar. they both involve a main character with a goal they want to achieve, but they have to fight different people to get to their destination. I believe another similarity is that their books involve a lot of emotion that I can relate to.

Morris Gleitzman doesn't write from personal experiences, as he believes that he should write about things that he could never do in real life. Rick Riordan in the past was a english and history teacher. this suggests why Rick Might right books on Greek Mythology. Rick also writes about what he cannot do in real life.

Once

Once cover
Once
From 1939 until 1945 the world was at war. The leader of the Nazis, Adolf Hitler, has sworn to kill every last jew, to make them extinct. Felix, the main character is unaware of the on going war. As his parents put him in a christian Orphanage at a young age, to protect him from Adolf Hitler and his army, as he is a jew. Felix is filled with enjoyment as he forces himself to belive that his parents are back at their home town to take him back from the orphanage. this excitement quickly ends when he finds out what is really going on in the world. While running from Adolf hitlers men, Felix saves an optimistic yet Childish girl named Zelda. They create a close bond as they can relate to each other as they don't yet know where their parents are or what happened to them. Together Felix and Zelda save Each others lives Along their Journey to find their parents.

This is by far one of my favourite books. For me it is like a stimulus to what happened in world war 1. Morris Gleitzman creates time travel for my mind. It takes me back in time, to experience the sadness and to sympathise with the other characters such as Felix, during that time period. This book is very intense which made me not put it down. The very descriptive language allows you to visualise the scene with ease. It gets your heart racing during the action scenes and slows your heart when something sad and dramatic happens.  I Highly recommend this book to anyone.

Blurb of Once:

Once I escaped from an orphanage to find Mum and Dad.
Once I saved a girl called Zelda from a burning house.
Once I made a Nazi with toothache laugh.
My name is Felix.
This is my story.
Everybody deserves to have something good in their life.
At least once

The Blurb above is what Led me to reading this legendary book.  I had to choose from 6 or 7 books for readers cup in primary school, and Once just so happened to be in it. I straight away chose this book after reading the other books blurbs, I didn't even consider the other books when I saw this. Even though i am not much of a reader, i decided to read the second book: Then because i adored the first book.

Percy Jackson

A 'Normal life' is what percy jackson thought he had, but that was before he was attacked by his maths teacher, who was apparently a Greek mythology monster. This is how Percy's adventure began. The story consists of three main characters, Percy, Annabeth and Grover. The three set off to find Zeus' lost master bolt, but they only have 10 days to find it, or else. Percy, later finds out that he is the son of one of the 'big three' Greek gods. He is the son of 'Poseidon' the god of the sea.

In 'Normal' books, I find as if the start of the book bores me and i just want to get the start over and done with, but with this book the action started at the START. This amazed me as no other book i had read had done this. Throughout the whole book, Rick Riordan added more exciting things that forced me to read on. Things like: a pen that turns into a bronze sword or a cap that makes you invisible. I could go on forever, though I might reveal to much of the book for some readers' likings. The intensity of this book makes me feel like i am a part of it. It allows me to imagine things that would Never happen in real life.

The Italics of certain words used in the book excites me for some reason. it allows my brain to think how the author would want me to read it. The book also makes me realise what humanity is doing to the Planet earth that we call 'home'. This is because one of the characters (Grover) is like an environmentalist and emphasises ( because he is not human) that humanity is destroying the environment.

The Blurb

A blurb to me is like a trailer meant for a book. It enables the reader to get a feel about what the book is about. This allows the reader to decide wether he or she wants to read the desired book. I like to read blurbs to save me from reading a book that is in my opinion, boring. Which is a waste of time as i put the book down, when i get too bored with it. Rick Riordan was able to lure me in to reading 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

The part of the blurb that caught my attention was:
I never wanted to be a half blood.\
This part intrigued me to want to read the rest of it. The blurb of this book is definitely the whole book summed up. It told me some major parts of the story without giving anything away.

What is in a title?

Percy Jackson
and the lightning thief
Is this the best title the author could choose?
I believe that this was the appropriate title to choose. it allows you to think "I wonder what Percy Jackson does during the book" or " I wonder what Percy's personality is." Also, if you enjoyed 'Percy Jackson and the lightning Thief' it is easy to tell what the rest of the series is called. I chose this book for my assignment because of the title, Not so much the "Percy Jackson" part but the ' Lightning Thief ', when I read this, i straight away thought whats a lightning thief. This intrigued me enough to make me read the book.

An alternative Title for this book could be: The son of the Sea God, I chose this as an alternative because a main part of the story is percy finding he is the son of Poseidon the sea god and his new 'abilities' that he discovers when he comes in contact with water. A second alternative title could be: Semigod. i believe that this title could bait people in to reading this because it is simply an intriguing title. It also describes Percy Jackson as he is a 'Demi-God'.

If rick Riordan releases another 'Percy Jackson' Book, a suggestion title would be 'The Return of Kronos'. I would think this because in the novel 'Percy Jackson and the lightning thief', They speak of Kronos controlling some of the Gods. i would say the 'return' because the book suggests (also Greek mythology) that the gods and Kronos had a war and Kronos was sent to the underworld.  Another suggestion title would be 'Percy Jackson and the threat of world war 3'. In the book Rick Riordan wrote that the world war 1 and 2 was started by the gods.
